Desktop Calendar: iDeskCal http://brad.globeproductions.com.au/lifestream/items/view/13254/desktop-calendar-ideskcal

I love finding amazing applications that I can actually use on a daily basis. Everyone knows my love for Evernote, but now I have a new love. That’s right! You heard it here. iDeskCal brings your calendar to your desktop, and it also allows you to add events and tasks without even having to go into iCal. Best of all, it integrates fully with iCal. This great little utility is customizable, and it has a beautiful yet simple interface. For $12.99 USD, this app is a steal. Try it now for 14 days, and see how you like it. I don’t know why any one wouldn’t buy this, though. It is the most useful calendar application I have found thus far. More Info: http://hashbangind.com

Shortcut Mysteries http://brad.globeproductions.com.au/lifestream/items/view/12761/shortcut-mysteries

I love my keyboard shortcuts, I couldn’t function without them. Even when I start using a new application, I try to find what built-in shortcuts will prove to be the most useful to me. Like spotlight for example. I can’t count the number of times I use ? + Space a day. This is true for a lot of applications that I run though. I only use shortcuts when I use Evernote, and it makes it more time efficient for me But why do I bring this up? I mean shortcuts aren’t really mysteries are they? Well recently I stumbled across a shortcut on my Macbook Pro that launches a quick add event window for iCal. This command is ? + Space. Normally this launches full screen quick view in finder and in other applications it does other tasks. But when I use this shortcut and where in any application I get an “Add Event” window. I have been trying to track it down, but haven’t had much luck. I have checked every where that I could think of, Even in the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences. It is driving me crazy! I could over look it if I knew how it happened, But it is a complete mystery to me. So my question to you is, have you ever found a keyboard shortcut that was a complete mystery to you about how it got there? If so, let us know in the comments, and if you have any insight to this phenomena, let us know that too.

Procrastinate now or later? http://brad.globeproductions.com.au/lifestream/items/view/12238/procrastinate-now-or-later

Put Things Off is a handy little iPhone app from a gentleman by the name of Nick Cernis. It is a mix between a To Do list/Task Manager and a procrastination device. You have the ability to input your tasks and if you don’t date them, you sort them by what you want to do today, or what you can afford to put off. This could be bad for someone like me, I procrastinate quite a bit. That being said though, I found this to be a todo app that I was actually using. Maybe it is because it is fun to say “Nah, I can do that some other time,” but I was planning my days with this. That never occurs with me. I asked Nick in one of our emails if he had any plans of integrating with Google Tasks. He said that it wasn’t anything that was planned due to support issues with a 3rd party. Which is understandable. Though I think we will be seeing quite a bit more out of Nick in the future and hopefully the near future.  For more on Put Things Off, Watch the Screencast below.

Back to School: Cases http://brad.globeproductions.com.au/lifestream/items/view/11671/back-to-school-cases

Protecting your geeky toys is an important thing. You have spent good money on your Mac, iPod, and iPhone. You don’t want to get this stuff damaged. Today more than ever these items are part of our every day life and we have at least one of them with us at all times, maybe even all. But with all the companies out there that make cases for our toys, which ones are the best? Well, I am going to tell you from my own experiences. iFrogz: I have to say, iFrogz was the first company that I ever purchased an iPod case from. They are super affordable, have awesome sales, and also have a huge selection of protection for your iPod and iPhone. The only thing they don’t carry is cases for your MacBook Pro. They carry any where from silicone to hard plastic cases for the iPhone and great colors too. I have yet to use any of their hard shell cases, but their silicone cases are in my opinion the best on the market. I know, it isn’t always cool to have a case for your jesus phone, But you will be happy with iFrogz. iSkin: Maybe one of the more popular case makers out there, iSkin offers a pretty nice variety of protection for your iPhone and iPods. I have only used a couple of their cases though. By far my favorite case that iSkin offers is the Revo 2. It offers full protection of your iPhone including screen protection! Now I don’t mean just one of those little flimsy films, I am talking about a chunk of plastic that sits over the screen. It does get annoying though at times, so when I use the case, the screen guard is only on when the iPhone is in my pocket. The great thing about iSkin is they are always introducing new styles of cases for you. Griffin: Probably the most complete line of apple gear in general, Griffin offers great iPhone, iPod and Mac cases. My favorite case from Griffin though, is the Clarifi. For those of us that have the 3G it is a crucial case for us. The Clarifi gives us the ability to take macro shots with our iPhone. This case is perfect for people like me who use evernote all the time. Any time I get a receipt or business card I snap a picture of it with my iPhone using the clarifi case. I get crystal clear and readable results. On top of that, they also offer some MacBook Pro cases. Brenthaven: And finally something that isn’t iPod related. Though some may argue with me here, I consider laptop bags to be cases. They offer protection and hold our stuff. Brenthaven is the only laptop bags that I will buy for my macs. I have two currently (one for my MacBook and one for my MacBook Pro) and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. Brenthaven has some of the best bags out there and they are practically indestructible. They even have some videos up for some of their bags showing some crazy stuff. These are of course just a few of the options out there. But these are my top picks. Check them out. Also tell us your favorite cases in the comments.

Snow Leopard’s Release is Just Around the Corner http://brad.globeproductions.com.au/lifestream/items/view/11447/snow-leopards-release-is-just-around-the-corner

Who’s ready to upgrade to Snow Leopard?  With only days before it goes on sale, you might be asking yourself, will Snow Leopard work on my PowerPC Mac, or if I still have Tiger on my Intel Mac, can I use the upgrade DVD?  You might also be thinking about backing up or cloning your existing Leopard Volume.

The question I hear a lot is, “Will Snow Leopard work on my PowerPC Mac?” the answer is “No”.  This will be the first operating system since Apple switched to all Intel processors that will not support the PowerPC Mac.  But, don’t get discouraged because Leopard runs very well on a PowerPC Mac.

As for Mac users that still have Tiger on their Intel Macs, you can still install Snow Leopard.  The caveat, though, is that you will not be able to use the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade.  Instead you will have to use the Mac Box Set.  This Box Set includes the full version of Snow Leopard along with iLife ‘09 and iWork ‘09, all for $169.  If you break down the cost of each software you’ll be saving around $118 with this Box Set.

As an added assurance, I recommend making an image of your current computer.  I find making an image is far better than making a last minute backup.  Because inevitably, you will miss files here and there.  To clone your Leopard Volume you’ll need two things.  First, you’ll need an additional partitioned hard drive.  I use an external hard drive because I have iMacs and a MacBook.  Second, you will need cloning software.  There are two I recommend.  The first one is SuperDuper! from Shirt Pocket.  This application will cost you $27.95.  The other application is Carbon Copy Cloner from Bombich Software.  This application is free.  Both applications work very well.  I personally use Carbon Copy Cloner.  It’s free and does the job fine.

I hope these steps will make your upgrade process a smooth and simple one.  I would like to hear your upgrade experience, or maybe you have different steps to upgrading.  If so drop a line in the comments section.

1Password Prepares for Snow Leopard http://brad.globeproductions.com.au/lifestream/items/view/11443/1password-prepares-for-snow-leopard

It is my favorite utility app, and I am sure it is your favorite. At least, it should be. 1Password has been preparing for its next big release with 3.0. They have been keeping very busy. Not only do they have a great desktop app, but also a fantastic iPhone app that has been seeing pretty regular updates. But let’s get back on track. 1Password 3 is on the horizon and Agile is offering early upgrades. If you upgrade early you will save 33% off the regular upgrade price. But that’s not all, you will also be able to be part of the beta process. Now if you have purchased a license after February 1, 2009, you already have a version 3 license. Remember though if you use the beta, that it is not fully functional and may have some bugs. So if you are depending on 1password for a lot of things, I would wait until the final release. Now like every one, Agile was caught a little off guard by the release of Snow Leopard. Everyone was made aware that it would be mid to late September for its release, so 1Password is not quite ready for Snow Leopard. But they do have a wonderful post on how to use 1Password and snow leopard You can find it here. For up to the minute details from 1password just go to their site at 1Password.com

Mind Mapping with Curio http://brad.globeproductions.com.au/lifestream/items/view/10565/mind-mapping-with-curio

I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to play around with Curio over the last few months. If you are not familiar with Curio, you need to get familiar with it. Curio is mind mapping at its best. Just think, if you are a Writer, Teacher, Business owner or anything really, you can make use of this wonderful application. Mac OS X sleep and restore on the MSI Wind netbook

I'm amazed at how quickly the MSI Wind goes to sleep and wakes back up with Mac OS X. Actually, the video would have been even shorter if I hadn't been so shocked and mesmerized by this. I haven't modified the netbook hardware in any way at this point: this is the "stock" Intel Atom at 1.6 GHz, the 5400 RPM hard drive with 80 GB of capacity and the factory installed 1 GB of RAM.
